“Long night of science 2025”: ITC participates with “Walking on water”

At Clausthal University of Technology’s “Long Night of Science 2025,” the ITC participated with the “Walking on Water” experiment, inviting people of all ages to join in and give it a try. By using an aqueous polymer solution (50% by weight starch in water), “walking on water” was made possible—for those who were fast enough. Under light loads, such as slow walking or slowly dipping a hand into the solution, the polymer solution appeared liquid; under heavy loads, such as running quickly, it appeared solid. This phenomenon is called “shear thickening.” The participants were then amazed to discover that their “feet stayed dry” when they ran fast enough across the polymer solution. A successful evening with plenty of fun for all participants and ITC members!
